Powerful, strong lawn mower brands have been showing lawns who's boss for decades. But now contraptions that could not cut butter without a good shove are quietly – really quietly – making a comeback.
Manual Honda lawn mowers, while the 98-pound weak tool shed, are being pushed around more meters across the country.
James Gibbs, assistant manager of Pleasants Hardware in 2024 W. Broad St., estimates that sales of the grass cutters are almost 20 percent.
"Especially here in the District of fans, where people do not have big yards," said Gibbs.
Aimee Perron Seibert and her husband, Randy Seibert, has a manual mower for the yard of his Church Hill because the device takes up little space in your ship and is light.
"I can take it with a hand over his house to the front yard," said Aimee. "Also, no sense for a facility gas or electric mower so tiny. "The Seiberts also glad that does not have to worry about gasoline, oil or cables extension.
The only downside?
"I can not ride to the convenience store," he said.
One of the few companies that U.S. makes the reel type mowers reports an increase in sales.

Phenomenal might be a bit strong. The exact statistics are not available, but McClain figures U.S. consumers 350,000 manual mowers bought in the U.S. each year – most made by his company. This is only a fraction of the 6 million gas walk-behind mowers that hit the market last year.
However, this number is about 100,000 more than were sold just five years ago and seven times to 50,000 thousand a year are sold in the 1980s, McClain said.
American Lawn Mower was one of 60 domestic manufacturers of manual mowers at the end of World War II, when he began to take power saws on the industry, said McClain. Other manufacturers that manual mowers outside the U.S.
Among the benefits of hand mowers, Gibbs said, are its environmental friendliness and cleaning, cutting close they provide.
Lawn mowers are also appealing because they are inexpensive – about $ 200 – and simple to operate.

"Two out of three people buying manual mowers were female," said Terry Jarvis, president of Sunlawn Inc., Fort Collins, Colorado-based company that has been selling lawn mowers for 10 years and making its own for two.
"Women like the simplicity of lawnmowers, that work, "he said." I constantly hear women commenting, "I love the useful exercise."
Cameron Atkins, manager area Lowe's store in Richmond at 1640 W. Broad St., saw no significant increase in sales of reel mowers. But he added that buyers more common for older mower, which as its ease of use.
Besides the personal satisfaction that you get a nice garden, gardening adds more value than any other home renovation.
A recent study by Michigan State University found that depending on where the house is of high quality landscaping adds 5 percent to 11 percent of its price.
